Annual SSVMS Event Connects High School Students to Careers in Medicine

This year's Future of Medicine program, which gives high schoolers an opportunity to get a preview of a career in health care and shadow medical professionals, drew 112 students from 30 schools in person and online.There will be four sessions next year, two in the spring (March 17-20 and April 14-17) and two in summer (June 9-27 and June 23-July 18). If you'd like to help give a high school student a taste of what it's like to be a doctor and allow them to shadow you for a few days, please contact Sam Mello.We want to thank UC Davis Health, Kaiser Permanente, and the physicians who offered their facilities, time and practices to make White Coat Week and our Future of Medicine sessions a big success!

It's always rewarding to hear from students who enjoyed Future of Medicine and are open to a career in health care.

FOM participants enjoyed a tour of the Museum of Medical History led by Dr. William Vetter.

Students built their own blood samples with Orbeez, beads and oil, and then matched their “sample” to a patient in need.

Students from 30 area high schools participated and learned about health care at UC Davis Health, Kaiser Permanente, at private practices and at SSVMS.

Staff members from state Sen. Angelique Ashby's office attended the Future of Medicine event.
